Evolving

September 14th, 2011

vintage 32 oz scale...coming soon!

We’d like to let you know of some big changes coming to Urban Tastes as we move the business in a new direction as Urban Tastes Home.  September 27 will be our last day with the a la cart menu we’ve used.  The following week we will begin featuring a family-style menu with two selections and dessert.

Urban Tastes Home will feature hand-painted furniture and other new and vintage home items.  A small selection of items will be available on the website starting the first week in October so be sure to check it out.  In early 2012, we’ll have a completely new look with a new logo and an updated site.

Thank you all so much for your support and please let me know if you have any questions.

Continued Changes

February 2nd, 2011

We’ve messed around with the second delivery day a bit over the years.  First it was Friday, then after eliminating the second delivery day for a while, we changed it to Thursday thinking the demand would increase.  However, that didn’t happen.  While we would love to have the demand to continue with Thursday deliveries, there just aren’t enough Thursday orders to make it a viable option.  While we don’t want to call this change permanent, please anticipate that it will last into the spring and most likely over the summer (which is a slow time of year anyway).  That said, please let us know if you would be interested in a second delivery day as the more people we are aware of who want it, the more likely it will return.  Any other ideas are welcome too!

We apologize for the inconvenience to those few who did get a Thursday delivery.  This wasn’t any easy decision but we feel it was the right choice for now.

Temorary January Changes

January 5th, 2011

Happy new year everyone!

Just wanted to give an update of some temporary changes that I’ve had to make while on maternity leave.  I’m grateful I’ve been able to continue to keep Urban Tastes open for the time I’m away.  Last time that wasn’t an option!  But while this time around we are open, there are a few small changes I’ve had to make to keep things running smoothly and to keep additional costs down.  For the rest of January, we will continue doing Tuesday deliveries only.  And additionally, we will be offering four entrees instead of the usual five.  While there are usually two vegetarian options, for the rest of the month, there will be just one.  I appreciate your understanding in this and please let me know if you have any concerns!

Certifikid Details

November 5th, 2010

Wow!  Certifikid was a hit.  We didn’t expect so many purchases but are certainly thrilled about it!  In the meantime, please get your orders in early because we have to put a weekly cap on Certifikid orders in order to keep things running smoothly.  We will let you know if we have to push your order back, but hopefully it will not be a problem.  Thanks everyone for your purchases!

Baby Birth Month Giveaway

October 27th, 2010

Starting in November, enter your family in our new baby birth month giveaway!  If you’ve had a baby in the month (and year!) we’re in, just send us an email and include your new baby’s name and birth date.  At the end of every month, we’ll draw a name and the winner will receive two dinners for two.

Not So Fine Print:

  • If you’d like to be kept off our mailing list, please include that in your email as well.
  • Meals must be ordered for a single delivery.
  • For new babies only; not the same birth month of a different year

Ed: And to get things started, feel free to enter your baby born in October of this year!

Panko-Crusted Trout & Green Salad

September 10th, 2010

Here is another easy recipe. This one sounds fancy, but only takes about 1/2 an hour. There’s nothing to chop here, making it go pretty fast.  The only thing that might take some time is seeding the pomegranate.  If you’ve never done it before, the key is to pull apart the segments instead of cutting which will ruin some of the seeds and make a bigger mess.  Panko is a Japanese-style bread crumb which I think makes things extra light and crunchy. When we don’t have any, we use whatever other bread crumbs we have on hand. This week, we super quickly made some using about 6 inches of baguette thrown in the food processor until fairly fine. This recipe is meant to be more of a guide than anything, so if you find you don’t have enough of something, add a little more or if it doesn’t feel right, alter it. The salad was a simplified version of this week’s UT’s salad leftovers.

Serves 4

4 trout (or other mild white fish like tilapia) fillets, skin off
salt & pepper
2 eggs, beaten and placed in a shallow, wide bowl (big enough to dip the entire fillet in)
1/2 cup flour in a wide bowl or plate
2 cups panko (or any other form of bread crumb) in a wide bowl or plate
1/2 cup canola oil

4 handfuls of clean, fresh spinach or arugula
1/2 cup+ pomegranate seeds (other options: raisins, dried cranberries, cherries, figs, etc)
2-3 oz gorgonzola, crumbled (other options: salty, crumbly cheeses like feta or goat cheese, slices of grilled halloumi)
a handful of nuts or seeds, toasted
juice of 1/2 lemon
splash of olive oil

Prepare the salad first.  Combine first four ingredients and drizzle juice and olive oil on last.

Heat oil in a large frying pan.  Sprinkle salt & pepper on both sides of fish.  Dredge the fish in flour, then dip in egg mix and then coat well in panko. If you’ve fried fish before, feel free to fry them all at once.  If not, it might be less stressful to just do one or two at a time.  I know the feeling of thinking that I had to get them all flipped at once. This will take some of that pressure off.  When oil is hot, but not smoking (too hot!), place fish in the pan on medium heat and cook until golden-brown—about 3 minutes. Turn the heat down if you feel it’s cooking too fast.  Turn over and cook the other side for about 3 more minutes.

Place on top of the salad and eat up!

Keep It Simple

August 20th, 2010

Sometimes we forget to keep things simple, especially when it comes to food.  This lunch is a delicious, yet super simple meal for a light lunchtime bite. It’s almost too easy to mention, but consider it a yummy reminder to stay simple.  The quality of the ingredients is key here so think farmers’ market!

Ingredients

bread (I like Kalamata olive sourdough from Atwater’s), toasted
hummus
one ripe tomato, sliced and sprinkled with salt & pepper
fresh basil, torn into smallish pieces
other ideas: prosciutto or other deli meat; sliced mozzarella, grilled zucchini or squash

Spread hummus over toasted bread, add tomato slices & basil….eat!

Mom’s Group Promotion

August 5th, 2010

We’re out to feed hungry moms this fall!

Our newest promotion hits the streets this week.  Each week we will draw one lucky mom’s (or dad’s!) group and the group will receive a lunch provided by Urban Tastes!  The promotion lasts until the end of October so get your group registered now by emailing us with your info (just your group’s name and a little bit of info about you all will do)!  And please be rest assured that this is not an aggressive marketing campaign.  I won’t collect any details from members, but will drop off the food along with some coupons and ask any questions that anyone might have and then be on my way.

Not So Fine Print:

  • All you’ve got to do is provide the location of the lunch, like a group member’s house or a park.
  • Make sure there are between 5 and 25 people in attendance.
  • Be sure that most of the attendees are from within the Beltway as that is our boundary for regular meal delivery.

Return of Refer-A-Friend

May 6th, 2010

Refer-a-friend is back!  If you’re a UT customer and have a friend or family member who you think would like our service, put them in touch with us and you’ll both receive 2 free dinners-no catch whatsoever.  Just make sure they mention you! Additionally, we’d like to make this an ongoing program.  No start date.  No end date.  If you refer 2 people, then you get 4 four meals free and so on.  It’s pretty straightforward so go ahead and refer someone today! We ask only that you refer people you know and those who are genuinely interested.
